1970s
the murphy brothers , klebe high school friends , decided form band following graduation. @ time none of members knew how play instrument each member picked instrument learn , promised reunite within 1 year. within first year 3 got rehearse , record first album.
in 1977 shoes recorded album black vinyl shoes in jeff murphy s living room , pressed 1,000 copies on own label, black vinyl records. album sold @ local record stores , mail order through bomp! magazine. shoes released single tomorrow night on bomp! records in june 1978. after black vinyl shoes licensed pvc records released album in november 1978. group signed elektra records in april 1979 , released first major label album, present tense, september. album peaked @ number 50 on billboard 200 , yielded minor hit single late reached number 75 on billboard hot 100.
1980s , 1990s
when mtv went on air on august 1, 1981, channel aired 4 of shoes videos: late , tomorrow night , cruel , in arms again , making shoes 1 of first bands shown on mtv.
the band went on 3 more videos: in shadow (1982), when push comes shove (1985) , feel way (1991).
2000s
the shoes song eyes covered jeffrey foskett on 2000 album twelve , twelve.
in 2007, band released double cd titled double exposure, contains demos of songs albums present tense , tongue twister. in same time frame, jeff murphy published book entitled, birth of band, record deal , recording of present tense documents band s inception, major label signing , subsequent recording of first internationally distributed album, present tense. in january 2007 jeff released solo album titled cantilever.
2010s
in january 2011 shoes got in studio drummer john richardson lay down rhythm tracks new batch of shoes songs. on next 14 months recording continued on become first studio album of new material in on 17 years. released in mid-2012, ignition adds career spans more 4 decades, giving band milestone of releasing music in each of decades 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s , 2010s.
on july 9, 2014, skip meyer died. 64 years old.
