history
1947

the university of art , design linz successor art school (“kunstschule”) of city of linz, established in 1947. originally, school assigned premises in western bridgehead building @ hauptplatz 8. in later years, branch facilities set in bischofstraße , prunerstraße. institution operates 2 master schools of painting, headed herbert dimmel , karl hauk, serves director of art school until 1949, 1 master school of graphic art, headed dr. alfons ortner. in 1948 , 1951, respectively, master school of sculpture, headed walter ritter, , master school of typography , applied graphic design, headed friedrich neugebauer, follow suit.

1959/60

dr. alfons ortner appointed director. goal bring art school closer becoming academy of applied art.

1961/62

university of art , design linz

in 1961, art school of city of linz awarded full public-law status federal ministry of education; statute of school , curricular, scholastic , examination regulations revised; “master schools” called “master classes”. following new master classes introduced: advertising art, head: erich buchegger basic course, head: dr. roxane cuvay

1973

the federal act of 9 may 1973, federal gazette no. 251/1973, transforms institution “academy of art , industrial design in linz” (hochschule für künstlerische und industrielle gestaltung in linz). prof. dr. alfons ortner voted founding rector.

endowment of chair handicraft education , appointment of prof. helmut huber head , endowment of chair textile design , appointment of prof. fritz riedl head.

1977 1980

in autumn 1977, fund of academy of design of linz” organises exhibition “forum metall linz” (concept developers, organisers , artistic directors: helmuth gsöllpointner , peter baum). in summer 1980, fund co-operates new gallery of city of linz , others in organising exhibition “forum design – design formt den alltag” (concept helmuth gsöllpointner, angela hareiter, laurids ortner , peter baum).

1984 1990

the construction of new building institution initiated , former ringbrot factory in urfahr, sonnensteinstraße/reindlstraße converted university use. chair handicraft education , master classes sculpture, visual design , ceramics move converted building in 1986. in 1990, master classes painting , graphic art, visual media design, metal, textile design, chair environment design, central media workshop, printing shop, silkscreen workshop, chapter of austrian national union of students , parts of administration move new building in urfahr.

1995 1997

the former pipe tobacco factory (peter behrens building) on untere donaulände (built between 1929 , 1935 peter behrens , alexander popp) rented. master classes sculpture , experimental visual design move urfahr peter behrens building.

1998 2000

on 1 october 1998, new federal universities of arts organisation act (kuog) enters force. per day, institution becomes university of art , design linz . per 27 september 2000, bodies of kunstuniversität linz elected according provisions of kuog 1998, , per 28 september 2000, institution wholly subject kuog 1998.

on 5 april 2000, univ.-prof. dr. reinhard kannonier elected first rector under provisions of kuog 1998.

2002 2003

foundation of forum – friends , alumni of kunstuniversität linz; setting-up of international research laboratory design-organisation-media (dom); (head: arch. dipl.-ing. michael shamiyeh).

univ.prof. dr. reinhard kannonier re-elected rector four-year term of office. acting upon proposal univ.prof. dr. reinhard kannonier, university council chooses 3 vice-rectors. size of senate of kunstuniversität linz set @ 12 members founding assembly.

2004

since 1 january 2004, university has been operating “corporation under public law” according new universities organisation act of 2002 , hence largely autonomous.

what has remained constant many decades since inception several core competencies of kunstuniversität linz: free artistic , applied design, interdisciplinarity, teaching @ high level. in recent years, profile of university has been largely determined 3 focuses on intermediality, spatial strategies , artistic-scientific research.
