johnson signed division 4 side southend united in january 1971, £7,000 fee. settled in well, scoring 8 goals in 21 games during remainder of 1970–71 season. johnson virtual ever-present next 3 seasons, helping club promotion division 3 in 1971–72 season , picking club s player of year award performances in 1972–73 season. departed shrimpers in november 1974, after making 170 appearances , scoring 38 goals.
