Lane violation Key (basketball)
wally szczerbiak shoots free throw; in leagues, team of free throw shooter has @ 2 players (aside free throw shooter) on sides of key, while opposing team has three.
jason bohannon shoots free throw; in american ncaa, there can @ 3 players on each side of key during free throw.
when player shooting free throws, there number of players @ boundaries of key, each occupying slot traced @ boundaries of key. in cases, free throw shooter behind free throw line, while 3 of opponents along sides of key, 1 side 2 players, other one. 2 of opponents situated nearest basket on both sides, while 2 teammates beside 2 opponents closest basket, other player opposing team situated farthest basket. in u.s. ncaa, there many 6 players along key, opposing team allowed have many 4 players, same arrangement in nba , fiba player facing teammate farthest basket. no player along lane may enter key until shot released; player shooting free throw, , on top of key, should not pass free throw line until ball hits rim. if of offensive players violate rule, no points awarded shot and, if there no more shots remaining, ball given defending team. if defending player in lane soon, shot awarded regardless of whether shot made or missed.
note in fiba play, if shooter commits violation, automatic turnover. if shot successful , shooter not commit violation, other players commit violation, violations discarded. if players opposing teams enter key prior release of ball, jump ball done determine gets possession of ball (nba) or possession arrow rule (for other levels); in fiba play, applies if shooter misses, since successful attempt negates other penalties. in situations, lane violation penalties cannot occur if there further free throws awarded.
