in 1877, after purchasing 3 durand buildings , several lots on chatham street, secor associated 2 brothers, joseph , anthony hayek. trio styled firm northwestern trunk , traveling bag manufactory before, clearer emphasis on m. m. secor s role. in 1878, secor became sole proprietor. m. m. secor company produced thousands of trunks, creating distinctive trunk styles, such champion wall trunk. secor built five-story brick building on chatham street, manufactured approximately 100 trunks day, , grossed $100,000 year.


this wealth permitted secor build beautiful home on entire block, including large flower conservatory , hothouse. noted gardens, fruit tree plots, , water fountain adorned entrance. secor had strong affinity nature , great lover of animals. estate contained small, personal zoo housed half-dozen deer, 2 bears, several parrots, , other birds. factory employed 70 80 people in 1880s, , several hundred more in heydey, , manufactured trunks , valises, sold in sections of country except east coast. secor owned block named after him, fire-proof building in racine built. other industries on m. m. secor block included new office building, belle city furniture company building, , bathrooms furnishing turkish, russian, , karlsbad commodities.
