grand forks uses mayor-council model of municipal government. mayor, elected every 4 years, has power oversee daily administration of city government , work directly department heads ensure proper provision of services. mayor of grand forks obstetrician dr. michael brown. first elected in 2000 , re-elected in 2004 , again in 2008.


the city divided 7 wards each ward electing single city council representative four-year term. council meets twice month council proper , 2 main committees, finance/development committee , service/safety committee, each meets twice month. these meetings broadcast on local cable channel.
