with exception of brief period in 1838 , 1839, coins minted @ u.s. branch mints prior 1909 displayed branch s mintmark on reverse. larger denominations of gold , silver coins labeled dahlonega, charlotte, , new orleans mintmarks (d, c, , o, respectively) on obverse (just above dates) in 2 years. carson city, served u.s. branch mint 1870 1893, produced coins cc mintmark. manila mint (the overseas u.s. mint, produced u.s. territorial , u.s. commonwealth coinage) used m mintmark 1920–1941.


between 1965 , 1967, mint labored replace silver coinage base metal coins, mintmarks temporarily dispensed (including on penny , nickel) in order discourage hoarding of coins numismatists. mintmarks moved obverse of nickel, dime, quarter, , half dollar in 1968, , have appeared on obverse of dollar coin since re-introduction in 1971.



penny: unlike other coins, had mintmarks on reverse until 1964, lincoln cent has had mintmark on obverse below date right of lincoln s bust since 1909 introduction.
nickel: mintmark located near rim of obverse side, clockwise date 1968 2005, right of thomas jefferson s bust. redesigned obverse of nickel appeared starting in 2006 has mintmark below date on lower right. many earlier nickels 1938 1964 still in circulation, , mintmarks can found on reverse right of monticello, exception of 1942–1945 war nickels cited elsewhere in article.
dime: mintmark above date on obverse side right of franklin delano roosevelt s bust.
quarter dollar: mintmark right of george washington s bust.
half dollar: mintmark below center of john f. kennedy s bust, above date.
eisenhower dollar (1971–1978): mintmark below center of dwight d. eisenhower s bust, above date.
susan b. anthony dollar (1979–1981, 1999): mintmark found left of susan b. anthony s bust.
sacagawea dollar (2000–2016): coins minted 2000 2008, mintmark below date. coins minted 2009 2016, date, mintmark , e pluribus unum moved rim of coin.
presidential dollar (2007–2016): mintmark , date found on rim of coin.


reverse of wartime nickel, p mintmark of philadelphia mint located above monticello


due shortage of nickel during world war ii, composition of five-cent coin changed include silver. mark change, nickels minted in philadelphia (which had featured no mintmarks until then) displayed p in field above dome of monticello. nickels san francisco minted in same fashion, , denver nickels reflected change in 1943. new mintmark location continued until 1946, when nickel returned pre-war composition.


the p mintmark, discontinued after war, reappeared in 1979 on anthony dollar. 1982, had appeared on every other regular-issue coin except cent, which, exception of 2017 lincoln cents, still bears no p mintmark. circulating cents struck in 1980s @ san francisco (except proofs) , west point bear no mintmark, facilities used supplement philadelphia s production. given limited numbers produced @ each facility, might have been hoarded collectibles.


for 2017, in commemoration of u.s mint s 225th anniversary, p mintmark placed on obverse of philadelphia-minted lincoln cents first time in coin s 100+ year history. p mintmark not re-appear 2018 circulation strikes minted in philadelphia.
