the current building designed in 3 phases: in 1915 holabird & roche s design first 16 floors built, , 5 floors added in 1922. built sixteen-story high lumber exchange building , later renamed 11 south lasalle street building. holabird & roche design had 3 basements , rock caissons. original 16-floor building late chicago school commercial building incorporated arches @ both fourth , top floor, when top 5 floors added in 1922 under original cornice, top rank of arches disappeared. building uses dark terra cotta italianate designs. vaulted ceiling , marble wall lobby contribute described classical entrance , lobby. palladian entrance uses contrasting white varigated , black marble.
tower addition
in 1925, building built current 35 story height addition of adjacent tower east of madison street frontage. entire building contains 330,000 square feet (31,000 m). 36-story tower added east of original structure on site of former desoto building @ 125-129 west madison. tower example of use of setbacks , uses ranks of paired windows. when tower built, 4 bronze bells cast meneely bell company (the second meneely bell foundry) , installed clock-chime. set chime original composition called samheim , norse tomorrow , every quarter-hour. largest of these bells weighs 7,201 pounds (3,266 kg; 514.4 st) , inscribed name leander in honor of leander mccormick. current roanoke building city s example of building in style of portuguese gothic architecture. according press release city announcing landmark promotion, building s terra cotta ornamentation derived portuguese gothic precedents. building modernized in 1950s , went through postmodern renovation in 1984 evoke original ornamentation. building has same frontage original roanoke building plus of former farewell hall (built william w. boyington @ 131-3 west madison street).
from 1920 until 1969 building hosted offices of law firm sidley & austin. today building leased small service industry firms, such second-floor tenant thomas p. gohagan & co., arranges travel trips , tours non-profit organizations.
