monument erected in 1593 in memory of sir john fettiplace (died 1580)


the oldest parts of church of england parish church of saint laurence 12th century norman. north aisle added late in century, linked nave four-bay arcade of pointed arches. in 13th century new window , doorway inserted in south wall of nave, priest s doorway on south side of chancel. east window of chancel 14th century in style.in 15th century perpendicular gothic bell tower added, window inserted on south side of nave , nave re-roofed. south porch added in 16th century, north aisle rebuilt in 17th century , north porch built in 1700. gothic revival architect cc rolfe restored nave in 1882–84. church grade ii* listed building.


monuments in church include brass of 2 shrouded corpses in memory of john goudrington, died in 1518, , wife. in chancel renaissance stone monument erected in 1593 in memory of sir john fettiplace, died in 1580. includes life-size effigy of sir john in 16th century armour, pair of corinthian columns supporting canopy surmounted pair of obelisks, , long latin inscription surrounded extensive strapwork , number of skulls.


the tower has ring of ten bells, cast whitechapel bell foundry. thomas ii mears cast seventh bell in 1817. george mears cast second , third bells in 1859 , ninth , tenor bells in 1861. mears , stainbank recast eighth bell in 1874 , cast treble, fourth , fifth bells in 1875. sixth bell recast in 1977.
