on july 13, 2016, after testing free agency, schultz returned pittsburgh penguins, signing one-year, $1.4 million contract.


in 2016–17 season, schultz had break-out year in first full season penguins. set career highs in goals (12), assists (39), points (51), penalties in minutes (34), power-play points (20), , shots on goal (154). in addition, first time in career, finished season positive plus-minus. total number of assists, points, points per game played, , plus-minus each finished within top 10 in respective categories among defencemen, , emerged top blue-liner penguins due star defenceman kris letang being limited 41 games various injuries. won second stanley cup member of penguins on june 11, 2017.
