on 17 january 2015, burns made first start socceroos since 2011, when lined final group game of 2015 afc asian cup australia against south korea.


on 3 september 2015, burns scored first goal australia, 8 years after senior debut, scoring in 5–0 defeat of bangladesh in 2018 fifa world cup qualifier.
