before world war ii prešov home large jewish population of 4,300 , housed major jewish museum. during 1939 , 1940 jewish community absorbed flow of jewish refugees nazi-occupied poland, , in 1941 additional deportees bratislava. in 1942 series of deportations of prešov s jews nazi death camps in poland began. plaques in town hall , memorial in surviving synagogue record 6,400 jews deported town under tiso government of first slovak republic. 716 jewish survivors found in city , surrounding when liberated soviet red army in january 1945.
