History Arlington High School (Texas)
1903: local schools taken on city of arlington carlisle military academy.
1904- 1922: high school, comprising grades 8 through 11, met @ south side school housed 1st-7th grades. north side school had 1st through 7th.
1905: first graduating class of high school made of 5 girls.
1908: first graduating class boys.
1922: arlington high school built on cooper st. , abram st., separating grades 8 – 11 separating first through seventh grades.
1923: arlington high students chose colts mascot , colors of kelly green , white, replacing former colors of black , crimson.
1942: twelfth grade added high school format children beginning school year. students in school skipped grade.
1950: first live little arlie; “sons of white & green” composed jane ellis/dean corey.
1951: arlington high defeats waco la vega class aa state championship title.
1956: last class graduate ahs on cooper st. , abram st.
1957: first class graduate ahs on park row.
1958: former ahs reopens ousley junior high, 8th grade only.
1963: last class graduate when arlington high city’s high school. sam houston high school opens in fall 1963.
sam houston, aisd s second high school, opened in eastern part of arlington in fall of 1963. original boundary between houston , arlington high school described cathy brown of dallas morning news north/south zig zag. boundary extended point near intersection of cooper @ mansfield northward arkansas lane. there, extended east johnson creek , ran alongside creek collins. after collins boundary traveled northward arlington city limits.
in 1965 aisd desegregated, arlington high school desegregated.
1968: ousley campus sold university of texas @ arlington; junior high relocated bailey junior high on bowen rd.
in 1970, lamar high school opened, relieving of overcrowding @ arlington , sam houston. cathy brown of dallas morning news said [t]he effect on arlington high school huge since housing in arlington zone north division had been moved lamar. 12th grade students had been zoned out of arlington high school continued attend arlington high school, despite being in lamar zone, class of 1971 had 1,000 students. each subsequent class size smaller.
1972: principal james crouch introduces slogan, “how sweet in colt country.” @ outdoor pep rally.
1977: logo sideways horseshoe representing “c” in colts used first time.
martin high school opened in 1982. because martin, located in southwest arlington, had opened, attendance zone of arlington high school lost many newly constructed houses affluent people, had been rezoned martin. brown explained wimbledon area shifted west, residents of shady valley area, still zoned arlington, growing older, , number of children decreasing. athletic teams @ arlington high school lost lot of talent martin, due martin rezoning.
1987: colts lose odessa permian in quarter finals begins colt stampede
1988-89: colts junior varsity , varsity both go undefeated in regular season.
1992: football makes semi-finals first time since 1950 s
1997: class of 2001 enters freshmen; becomes first freshmen class in 40 years.
2008: class of 2008 has first ib students in arlington (along bowie) receive ib diploma
2008: principal james adams retires after serving aisd 38 years. jennifer young selected serve ahs principal.
