candida, born juana josefa cipitria y barriola in basque town of andoain, gipuzkoa, went salamanca young girl support family. worked servant in various homes. cipitria affected, however, depth of poverty saw in society undergoing social effects of industrial revolution in country. spend whatever free time had helping poor, @ risk of losing employment.


seeking find god s herself in this, cipitria led founding congregation through vision of jesus experienced on friday of 1869. 2 years later, 5 other women, congregation established, @ time foundress, companions, took religious name known. assisted in jesuit father miguel josé herranz.


the congregation expanded rapidly in spain, receiving formal approval pope leo xiii on 31 july 1901. within ten years, foundress able begin first foreign mission in brazil, founding school there later followed mission china in 1931.
