this footbridge on barnsley boundary walk, upstream of tin mill dam. provides drier alternative adjacent set of stepping stones when river level high. bridge has above-deck truss design , constructed largely of tubular steel. manufactured tubewrights ltd of newport (monmouthshire). company specialised in fabrication of tubular steel structures. had other factories in london, liverpool , glasgow , in business 1899 until 1981. in 1961, company employed 1,200 people. pre-fabricated design of footbridge popular in years after world war ii , examples can found on britain.

station lane bridge carries unclassified road oughtibridge grenoside on river don. station referred “oughty bridge station” (east of road bridge) on former great central railway company s sheffield manchester route. opened in 1845 , closed passengers in 1959.


like of upper don, river @ oughtibridge appears benign, having small flow , being fordable below weir south of bridge. however, discussed in flooding section above, wide catchment area , sometimes-extreme weather in pennines makes river susceptible occasional flooding. 2 photographs illustrate contrast.

this footbridge on river don crossing in 4 km between station lane bridge in oughtibridge , leppings lane, hillsborough. erected allow workmen across river work in ganister mines of beeley wood , factories in clay wheels lane area of sheffield. benign-looking stretch of upper don. however, during 2007 floods, retaining wall of a6102 middlewood road north washed away north of rocher bridge. on year before damage repaired , road re-opened.

this footbridge connects parkside road main entrance football stadium. bridge built part of major £7 million re-development euro 1996 international competition. regards stadium itself, first match played on 2 september 1899 , in 1966 stadium selected 1 of venues football world cup. close footbridge memorial 96 fans lost lives @ hillsborough in 1989, during fa cup semi-final between liverpool , nottingham forest. in june 2007, river don burst banks during period of severe weather in area , whole ground flooded several feet of water. part of abortive plans england staging 2018 world cup, new bridge had been planned across river don entry west stand , have been upstream of main entrance footbridge.

this carries a61 dual carriageway across river don. part of a61, fronts football ground, widened in time 1966 world cup matches , still features flagpoles event.

there 2 (private) bridges connect cadbury s works on either side of don. however, there (public) footpath along northern bank of don (this form part of planned upper don walk) goes under 2 bridges. cadbury s (previously bassett s) works 1 of major employers in area. george bassett & co. ltd sweet factory 1 of longest serving of local firms, made world-famous manufacture of liquorice allsorts. firm established in sheffield in 1842 did not come hillsborough (owlerton) until 1934 when bassett s son-in-law samuel meggit johnson built large factory on beulah road (on south side of don). factory enlarged in inter-war period new products such jelly babies, wine gums , liquorice novelties added range.

in 1989 bassetts purchased cadbury schweppes group , became part of confectionery subsidiary cadbury trebor bassett. in 2010, cadbury s taken on kraft.

this bridge in hillsborough carries livesey street on don club mill road. previous bridge two-arched stone bridge, built in 18th century provide access wardsend cemetery, , destroyed floods on 25 june 2007. rebuilt 31.2-foot-wide (9.5 m) single-span integral bridge @ estimated cost of £673,000 , re-opened in 2009.

this bridge carries neepsend lane (b6074) on river don. on 11 march 1864, previous wooden bridge swept away great sheffield flood, caused collapse of dale dike dam. bridge replaced three-arched stone structure in 1885. alterations made in 1912 included rounded approaches, , lighting provided cast-iron gas lamps, contributed neepsend gasworks, located nearby.

this bridge carries rutland road (b6070) on river don. in 1800s, bridge commonly known neepsend bridge. in great sheffield flood of 1864, neepsend bridge managed withstand onslaught although large amount of debris piled against it. 3 elliptical arches built in 1854, although parapet later, had rebuilt following damage sustained during flood.

this road bridge carries a61 inner relief road on river. built part of £65 million scheme divert traffic away city centre, included 0.94 miles (1.5 km) of dual carriageway running penistone road wicker. road opened on 22 november 2007 rosie winterton mp.

the culverted river sheaf joins don beside blonk street bridge, named after benjamin blonk, tenant of castle orchards wheel 1750s 1770s. three-arched bridge built woodhead , hurst between 1827 , 1828. altered in 1913 , has cast iron balustrades.

to link wicker furnival road, new 44-yard (40 m) steel footbridge erected on 14 july 2010. bridge funded environment agency, yorkshire forward , european regional development fund part of multimillion-pound scheme regenerate wicker , surrounding area. original plans 98-yard (90 m) bridge crossing river @ angle, more direct route adopted. part of flood defence improvements, , includes trap floating debris beneath it. design based on butterfly wings, , project included new link 5 weirs walk , installation of footway lighting.

this bridge takes sheffield inner ring road on river don. part of ring road finished in 2000 cutlers gate , subsequently renamed in 2008 derek dooley way, in honour of late sheffielder played football sheffield wednesday before breaking leg , going on perform various backroom roles across city @ sheffield united. derek dooley way named section of ring road runs parkway wicker.

this 3-arch bridge built in 1856 , carries leveson street (b6071) on river. named after henry fitzalan-howard, 15th duke of norfolk. british conservative politician , philanthropist. served postmaster general between 1895 , 1900, best remembered philanthropical work, concentrated on roman catholic causes , city of sheffield. in july 1897 appointed first lord mayor of sheffield. made honorary freeman of city of sheffield in 1900. donated funds building of university of sheffield , initial chancellor between 1905 , 1917. burton weir downstream of norfolk bridge.

this carries a6178 attercliffe road on river don. washford or westforth bridge, @ sheffield end of attercliffe, first recorded in of 1535. rebuilt in wood in 1608 , 1647, in stone in 1672, 1789 , 1794. in 1940 air raid badly damaged washford bridge , adjoining pub, bridge.

this bridge carries stevenson road on river don , connects brightside lane attercliffe road. named after 1 of owners of attercliffe steam corn mill. bridge strengthened in 2004, hgv vehicles continue use it.

this bridge carries newhall road (b6083) on river don , connects brightside lane attercliffe road. in 17th century, newhall road bridge packhouse bridge in rural setting. road takes name handsome red-brick house known newhall, stood in later years newhall school built . house inhabited fell family. fells family of wealthy iron masters, dating 17th century. known have gained wealth , position oldest iron works in sheffield, named attercliffe forge.

also known brightside bridge, carries weedon street, links brightside lane attercliffe common. bridge downstream of brightside weir. bridge mentioned in records of great sheffield flood of 1864 follows: watchman on duty near brightside bridge had narrow escape. when passing bridge startled singular sound though steam distant engine had been let off, , after flood came rushing down. water rose rapidly on bridge , road. escape mounted wall, intending walk along place of safety; in moment felt wall tremble beneath him. jumped off it, , rushed through waters breast high towards midland railway, succeeded in reaching, , down walked sheffield .

this single-span metal bridge carried sheffield district railway on river don. opened in 1900, integrated lner in 1923 and, in british railways days, connected tinsley marshalling yard midland main line @ brightside junction. railway lines lifted in 1999, bridge still intact in 2013.

m1 tinsley viaduct

tinsley viaduct carries m1 london leeds motorway , a631 road on river don. two-tier viaduct on 0.6 miles (1 km) long , opened in 1968, @ cost of £6 million. strengthened in 1983 , again in 2006. 2006 refurbishment involved addition of 2,500 tonnes of steel , 3,500 tonnes of reinforced concrete, took 3 years complete , cost £81 million.
