causes
septic arthritis
septic arthritis due bacterial infection joint. requires urgent joint washout in operating room followed intravenous antibiotic therapy large joints. small joints or children can treated repeated aspirations , intravenous antibiotics.
gout
in gout, acute inflammatory arthritis caused excess uric acid caused either overproduction or under-excretion. before age of menopause, women have lower incidence males, rates equal above age. gout can cause mono- or polyarthritis, results in monoarthritis first.
pseudogout
when monoarthritis caused pseudogout (calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, cppd), inflammation lasts days weeks, , involves knees in half of attacks. gout, attacks can occur spontaneously or physical trauma or metabolic stress. patients may feel in between pseudogout attacks, , 5% present pseudo-rheumatoid symptoms.
osteoarthritis
osteoarthritis degenerative disease commonly involving knees , hips. results erosion of cartilage protecting bones rubbing together. osteoarthritis is, in fact, polyarthritis, starts in 1 joint before involvement of other joints, hence, mimicking monoarthritis.
