History New Cross railway station

in victorian railway boom 2 companies constructed lines through area. london , croydon railway (l&cr) built station on new cross road close hatcham in 1839. on 30 july 1849 south eastern railway (ser) opened station @ north kent junction when north kent line opened linking strood london , greenwich railway route london bridge. station proved inconvenient new station called new cross & naval school opened ser in october 1850 located adjacent new cross road in heart of new cross. in 1854 station renamed new cross. accordingly both south eastern railway (ser) , london brighton & south coast railway had stations named new cross caused confusion until 2 companies absorbed under 1923 grouping southern railway , name of older station changed new cross gate; ex-south eastern station remained new cross.
on 7 december 1869 east london line opened serving lbscr new cross station not until 1 april 1880 services (which started @ addiscombe , worked through liverpool street) started operation via new cross ser. freight trains operated via east london line , hauled great eastern railway locomotives through hither green goods yards. 30 june 1911 east london line passenger services south of new cross ceased.
on 31 march 1913 electric passenger services operated metropolitan railway started operation new cross , worked through kensington addison road via kings cross.
after world war ii , following nationalisation on 1 january 1948, fell under auspices of british railways southern region.
the east london line closed goods traffic in 1962.
the station rebuilt in 1970s , original station buildings on road bridge replaced replacement wooden building opened in 1975 in amersham vale. platforms on down , fast lines closed , demolished , new track layout introduced @ time in connection wider london bridge re-signaling scheme.
ten years later in 1985 present buildings in amersham vale opened.
up until 22 december 2007 london underground used serve station southern terminus east london line. closed major engineering work convert east london line standard 750 v third rail electrification. line reopened on 27 april 2010 services operated london overground using class 378 capitalstar units.
