allison allie jones (bridget fonda) software designer in new york city, engaged sam rawson (steven weber). in middle of night, sam s ex-wife calls, , revealed slept recently. hurt , angry allie throws sam out, breaking off engagement, , comforted neighbor graham knox (peter friedman), aspiring actor. next morning attends business lunch mitchell myerson (stephen tobolowsky), fashion house owner looking buy allie s revolutionary new program. manipulates reducing cost, on basis recommendations within industry future business. first , client, accepts.

allie advertises new roommate share apartment in ansonia. settles on hedra carlson (jennifer jason leigh), whom nicknames hedy , , become friends. hedy tells of how supposed twin twin stillborn, leaving constant feeling of loneliness. after few weeks, however, hedy becomes overly protective of allie erasing sam s voice-mail asking allie reconciliation. later buys puppy names buddy bond allie. hedy becomes jealous , upset when sam able win allie back.

that night while allie tells graham truth hedy, unaware hedy listening in apartment. when allie leaves, hedy goes apartment , attacks graham.

when sam returns following night, hedy again impersonates allie , performs oral sex on him. after act, hedy begs sam leave allie alone, sam refuses , insists on telling allie truth. furious, hedy kills him, gouging eye stiletto heel.
