why pal-m
ntsc being natural choice countries monochrome standard m, choice of different colour system poses problems of incompatibility available hardware , need develop new television sets , production hardware. walter bruch, inventor of pal, explains brazil s choice of pal against these odds advertising campaign telefunken , philips carried out across south america in 1972, included colour test broadcasts of popular shows (done tv globo) , technical demonstrations executives of television stations.
compatibility
pal-m signals identical north american ntsc signals, except encoding of colour carrier. therefore, pal-m display in monochrome sound on ntsc set , vice versa.
pal-m incompatible 625-line based versions of pal, because frame rate, scan line, colour subcarrier , sound carrier specifications different. therefore give rolling and/or squashed monochrome picture no sound on native european pal television, ntsc signals.
pal-m systems conversion issues
pal-m being standard unique 1 country, need of convert to/from other standards arises.
conversion to/from ntsc easy, colour carrier needs changed. frame rate , scan lines can remain untouched.
conversion to/from pal/625 lines/25 frame/s , secam/625/25 signals involves changing frame rates scan lines. achieved using complicated circuitry involving digital frame store, same method used converting between ntsc , 625/25 standards. fact colour encoding of pal-m , pal/625/25 same not help, entire signal goes through a/d-d/a conversion process anyway.
however special vhs video recorders available can allow viewers flexibility of enjoying pal-m recordings using standard pal (625/50 hz) colour tv, or through multi-system tv sets. video recorders panasonic nv-w1e (ag-w1 usa), ag-w2, ag-w3, nv-j700am, aiwa hv-mx100, hv-mx1u, samsung sv-4000w , sv-7000w feature digital tv system conversion circuitry.
pal 60
the pal colour system (either baseband or rf system, normal 4.43 mhz subcarrier unlike pal-m) can applied ntsc-like 525-line (480i) picture form known pal-60 (sometimes pal-60/525, pseudo-pal, or quasi-pal ). non-standard signal method used in european domestic vcrs , dvd players playback of ntsc material on pal televisions. s not identical pal-m , incompatible it, because colour subcarrier @ different frequency; therefore display in monochrome on pal-m , ntsc television sets.
