amusements

soon after founding, private park included beer garden , ballroom. little changed after swimming pool added in 1926, until 1970s when park added first serious amusement rides, including roller coaster , other, more standard fare including 7 swings, wonderland, , galaxy roller coaster.


water slides , pool

the pool , surrounding beach occupied 4.5 acres (18,000 m) of park. holding approximately 5 million gallons of filtered, chlorinated water, 7 hundred foot-long pool supplied artesian wells. depth ranged 1 foot 10 feet (3.0 m).


peony park home 3 water slides. in 1983 there endurance competition in winner, student @ university of nebraska @ omaha, slid down four-story water slide @ peony park 1,710 times in 87 hours , 19 minutes. winning won $1,300, 1950 vintage coke machine, moped, waterbed, stereo , other prizes offered radio station sweet 98 (kqkq-fm), sponsor of event.


royal terrace ballroom

on south side of lake royal terrace ballroom, billed 1 acre under 1 roof. big name bands swing era played ballroom on regular basis. columbus bandleader bobby mills played record 1 year straight each weekend in 1957. regional rock act rumbles reunited @ royal terrace in 1979. ballroom hosted events metallica, pearl jam, red hot chili peppers, replacements, living colour, 311, violent femmes, , bangles in later years.


royal grove

an open-air stage , orchestra shell covered white roof. called royal grove, area included open-air dance floor accommodated 3 thousand dancers.


from 1978 through 1981, omaha radio station koil hosted outdoor dance party called under stars in royal grove, broadcast live. began disco rondo (named after defunct soft drink) , changed sprite night , sponsored koil. disc jockeys christopher collins, chris moreau, randy malick, bill mattson , thousands of teens continued show each summer year after year, after koil altered format become more adult focused. after 1981, event moved kqkq-fm (sweet 98) , hosted teen dj hot scott.


additional structures

originally, there open area west of royal grove softball diamond , picnic , recreation grounds. there bathhouses, service buildings , refreshment stands throughout.
