the 2nd ranger infantry company 1 of sixteen ranger companies formed in 1950, , 1 of 7 see combat in korea. subsequent military science studies of korean war rangers have analyzed economy of force, focusing on how u.s. military employed rangers special forces. in thorough analysis of operations of ranger units in korean war, major chelsea y. chae proposed in 1996 thesis u.s. army command , general staff college rangers in korea misused , ineffective. chae contended ranger formations lack of support personnel made them logistical , administrative liability, had attached conventional units support. furthermore, chae argued small size of ranger units meant lacked manpower conduct basic tactical maneuvers, , employment divisional elements meant did not have necessary intelligence information conduct effective infiltration operations. concluded these problems due lack of understanding of ranger capabilities, limitations inherent in rangers force structure, , basic distrust of elite forces.
in own 2003 thesis, lieutenant colonel victor j. bond said 2nd ranger company s performance in korea had been exemplary, in spite of racial discrimination against it. troops, had been trained members of airborne units before joining company, gained cohesion , exceptional soldiers. bond contended rangers did not receive credit actions in korea, noting company did not receive republic of korea presidential unit citation or u.s. presidential unit citation though units attached decorated. bond said many of accomplishments of company attributed white units, due in part command climate precipitated almond.
