history
first formation

the division activated 1919 near petrograd during russian civil war, , fought on western front of war , in soviet-polish war. until 1923 headquarters @ minsk. during 1930s division part of 5th rifle corps, stationed in belarussian military district. moved north in 1939 , fought in winter war, including @ battle of kelja, later joining newly formed 13th army. in july 1941 division part of 3rd rifle corps of transcaucasian military district. order of 23 july 1941, 3rd rifle corps became 46th army, of 1 august 1941, , 4th rifle division became part of 46th army. in middle of april 1942 division under colonel i.p. roslogo fighting part of 12th army. in august 1942 participated in battle of caucasus. division disbanded after heavy combat in november 1942.


second formation

it reformed 1943 in moscow military district , april 1943 – may 1944 part of baltic front s 11th army. later reassigned 48th army. january 1945, part of 25th rifle corps of 69th army, took part in fighting puławy bridgehead in poland; weakened battle, effective strength reduced not more 6 battalions. in april 1945, still part of 69th army, took part in battle of berlin.


it disbanded in accordance stavka directive no. 11095 commander of 1st belorussian front renaming of front group of soviet occupation forces in germany , composition dated may 29, 1945. troops of division strengthened other group formations.


third formation

the division reformed again in 1955 179th rifle division in south ural military district @ buzuluk reorganised 4th motor rifle division on 25 june 1957. 4th motor rifle division disbanded in 1959.
