the locomotives became known four-coupled joys, joy valve gear equipped with. 1 of locomotives known have been named sir hercules, after hercules robinson, 1st baron rosmead, had succeeded sir henry bartle frere high commissioner southern africa in 1880 , after whom 2 towns in south africa named. named engine no. 83, either midland system s no. m83 or western system s no. w83. these locomotives later designated 3rd class when locomotive classification system introduced cgr.

at time four-coupled joy locomotives entered service in 1883, eastern system mainline east london open far queenstown branch king william s town, 2 midland system mainlines port elizabeth respectively open graaff reinet , approaching rosmead via cradock branch grahamstown, while western system mainline cape town approaching de aar branch malmesbury.
all these locomotives renumbered @ times during cgr era. 1886, system prefixes had been done away with. locomotives on western system retained numbers, while midland system s locomotives renumbered range 180 183. eastern system s 2 locomotives renumbered e15 , e16 610 , 611 respectively. 1888, after 3 systems had been linked @ de aar on 31 march 1884, midland system s locomotives renumbered once again, range 89 92, following on numbers of western system s locomotives.

in late 1896, of these locomotives sold oranje-vrijstaat gouwerment-spoorwegen, retained classification 3rd class. sale involved 5 locomotives numbers absent cgr roster first time year-end 1896, listed in table. these engines later fitted tilney-design extended type of smokebox spark arresters.

by 1912, 1 of these locomotives survived, eastern system s no. 611. considered obsolete sar, designated class 03 , renumbered 0611. 1918, had been scrapped.
