the barges performance perfected through annual sailing matches, in competed trophies , cash prizes. matches credited encouraging improvements in design, leading craft s highly efficient final form. begun in 1863 wealthy owner called henry dodd. dodd plough boy hackney, london, made fortune carrying city s waste country on barges. may have been model charles dickens s character golden dustman in our mutual friend. on death in 1881, dodd left £5000 future match prizes.


the thames , medway barge matches temporarily discontinued in 1963. in matches year, spinaway c (skippered george morgan) won thames race , came second in medway. memory came second in thames (skippered hedley farrington) , first in medway (skippered dick springett). these 2 last of restricted staysail barges win old classic races.


the matches have ceased , been reinstituted several times, , considered world s second oldest sailing race (after america s cup). course erith upriver, of 20th century start moved lower hope downriver gravesend estuary , gravesend.


2013 150th anniversary of thames match - , celebrate finish line @ erith. there full programme of races in 2017 on medway , thames.


the 109th medway barge race took place on saturday 3 june 2017. course 29 miles (47 km) gillingham pier, following channel medway buoy east of nore in thames , gillingham. 110th scheduled 19 may 2018.
