since first locomotives in united states imported united kingdom, british 4 ft 8 ⁄2 in (1,435 mm) standard gauge adopted first united states railroads. when new locomotive construction began in united states in 1831, new railroads opted different gauge, resulting in breaks-of-gauge railroads began joined together. apart freight reloading issues, result new locomotives of these railroads had delivered on flatcars.
