Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards Edith Anisfield Wolf



in 1935, created annual book award non-fiction books advance racial understanding, named john anisfield award in honor of father. in 1941 added second prize creative literature in honor of husband, , awards collectively called anisfield-wolf book awards.


while wolf never participated in selection of awardees, made anisfield-wolf juries composed of highly respected literary figures. ashley montagu served jury chairman 1954 through 1995. since 1996, jury has been headed henry louis gates, jr.. book awards honored harold foote gosnell in 1936 “negro politicians: rise of negro politics in chicago.” on 200 honorees since inception of awards, notable recipients during wolf’s lifetime included zora neale hurston, langston hughes, , martin luther king, jr. notable recipients after death have included alex haley, gwendolyn brooks, nadine gordimer, toni morrison, derek walcott, wole soyinka, henry louis gates jr., (also current anisfield-wolf book awards jurist), ralph ellison, quincy jones, junot diaz, chimamanda ngozi adichie , oprah winfrey.


the awards, $1,000 per recipient in 1930s, amount $10,000 each. categories fiction, nonfiction, poetry , lifetime achievement. saturday review magazine administered awards while wolf alive. awards managed cleveland foundation.
