in may 1945, @ end of world war ii in yugoslavia, soldiers of independent state of croatia began retreating towards austria, british forces located, intention surrender them rather advancing yugoslav partisans. many civilians, croatian armed forces fought way yugoslav-austrian border , surrendered on 15 may british army. around 25,000 reached border, town of bleiburg, while around 175,000 spread in nearby columns dozens of miles long. however, british army refused surrender on grounds axis troops should surrender armies fighting against. prisoners of war @ border repatriated yugoslav partisans.
