higher education
after gymnasieskola, students can apply university in order receive tertiary education. general academic degrees offered public universities , university colleges tend attract students on regional basis. besides general academic degrees, higher education system in sweden provides number of professional , vocational degrees in fields such engineering, law , medicine.
as of autumn semester 2011, higher education free of charge swedish, eu/eea, , swiss citizens.
on 1 july 2007, new higher education system came effect in sweden. higher education became divided 3 levels: basic level (grundnivå), advanced level (avancerad nivå), , doctoral level (forskarnivå). new changes included removing several professional / vocational degrees (yrkesexamina) redefining other pre-existing degrees.
basic level (grundnivå)
to admitted programme @ basic level, student must complete education @ gymnasieskola level or equivalent. degrees can obtained @ basic level are:
university diploma (högskoleexamen), 2 years, 120 higher education credits (högskolepoäng)
degree of bachelor (kandidatexamen), 3 years, 180 higher education credits
advanced level (avancerad nivå)
to admitted programme @ advanced level, student must have obtained 3-year swedish degree @ basic level or corresponding degree country or corresponding qualification. degrees can obtained @ advanced level are:
degree of master (one year) (magisterexamen), 1 year, 60 higher education credits
degree of master (two years) (masterexamen), 2 years, 120 higher education credits
both degrees require completing thesis.

doctoral level (forskarnivå)
to admitted programme @ doctoral level, student must have obtained swedish degree @ advanced level or completed @ least 4 years of full-time study @ least 1 year @ advanced level or corresponding degree country or equivalent knowledge. degrees can obtained @ doctoral level are:
degree of licentiate (licentiatexamen), 2 years, 120 higher education credits
degree of doctor (phd, doktorsexamen), 4 years, 240 higher education credits
postgraduate academic titles docent (associate professor) , professor (professor). each department has administrative officer, prefekt, docent.
grading
three sets of grades exist in swedish universities , university colleges. universities have introduced seven-grade scale (a-f, fx), similar ects scale, criterion-referenced grading instead of relative grading. common scale three-grade scale consists of u (underkänd in swedish, fail), g (godkänd, pass) , vg (väl godkänd, pass distinction). in set vg highest. other grade set consists of (u, 3, 4, 5) 5 highest. grade set given in courses within technical professional degrees. there courses, within 2 systems of grading, in can g (pass) or u (fail). instance, 1 semester thesis (specialized level) in computer science master s degree @ institutions 1 can grade g (pass) or fail, while equivalent thesis @ other institutions 1 can receive grade vg.
language requirements
before being accepted higher education programme in sweden, applicants must demonstrate minimum proficiency in swedish , english either taking 2 years of swedish , english or passing swedish b , english a. international applicants, test in swedish university studies (tisus), international exam can taken demonstrate proficiency in swedish. native language not english, international applicants can demonstrate proficiency in english obtaining minimum score of 173 points on toefl or minimum grade of b on cambridge first certificate in english exam. exchange students may have different language requirements.
student aid
swedish students receive economic swedish national board of student aid (csn) studying. every student entitled 12 semesters of allowances , loans, totaling 2,230 sek per week (june 2016: 261 eur, 268 usd, 185 gbp) full-time studies (after 1 july 2006). allowances 699 sek per week (june 2016: 75 eur; 84 usd; 58 gbp) loans covering rest. limits loans , allowances may substantially increased under circumstances.
