on 19 march, triton detected submerged peak, using sonar , gravity meter, , crossed equator second time–passing northern hemisphere again. submerged peak detected on 20 march. later day, triton made closest approach pearl harbor, , crew celebrated luau.


triton crossed international date line on 23 march, losing 24 march calendar. next day, sonar indicated rise ocean floor, uncharted, logged depth of 350 fathoms (640 m; 2,100 ft). 2 days later, 27 march, triton passed point of closest approach location namesake lost during world war ii, , memorial service held commemorate occasion. submerged naval gun salute fired honor lost crew when 3 water slugs shot in quick succession forward torpedo tubes.
