after 1794, prince edward lived @ headquarters of royal navy s north american station halifax, nova scotia. instrumental in shaping settlement s military defences, protecting important royal navy base, influencing city s , colony s socio-political , economic institutions. edward responsible construction of halifax s iconic garrison clock, numerous other civic projects (st. george s round church). lieutenant governor sir john wentworth , lady francis wentworth provided country residence use of prince edward , julie st. laurent. extensively renovated, estate became known prince s lodge couple hosted numerous dignitaries, including louis-phillippe of orléans (the future king of french). remains of residence small rotunda built edward regimental band play music.



prince edward commemorated lt. benjamin james, royal nova scotia regiment, died while trying rescue drowned in hms tribune (1797), old burying ground (halifax, nova scotia)


after suffering fall horse in late 1798, allowed return england. on 24 april 1799, prince edward created duke of kent , strathearn , earl of dublin, received of parliament , income of £12,000. in may same year duke promoted rank of general , appointed commander-in-chief of british forces in north america. took leave of parents 22 july 1799 , sailed halifax. on twelve months later left halifax , arrived in england on 31 august 1800 confidently expected next appointment lord lieutenant of ireland.
