the jmsdf commanded chief of maritime staff. structure consists of maritime staff office, self defense fleet, 5 regional district commands, air-training squadron , various support units, such hospitals , schools. maritime staff office, located in tokyo, serves chief of staff in commanding , supervising force.
the self-defense fleet, headquartered @ yokosuka, consists of jmsdf s military shipping. composed of fleet escort force (based in yokosuka, sasebo, maizuru , kure), fleet air force headquartered @ atsugi, fleet submarine force based @ yokosuka , kure, 2 mine warfare force based @ yokosuka , kure , fleet training command @ yokosuka.
each escort flotilla formed 8–8 fleet of 8 destroyers , 8 on-board helicopters, modification of old japanese navy fleet layout of 8 battleships , 8 cruisers. each force composed of 1 helicopter destroyer (ddh) acting command ship, 2 guided-missile destroyers (ddg) , 5 standard or asw destroyers (dd). jmsdf planning reorganize respective escort flotillas ddh group , ddg group, enabling faster overseas deployments.

district forces
five district units act in concert fleet guard waters of jurisdictions , provide shore-based support. each district home major jmsdf base , supporting perssonel , staff. furthermore, each district home 1 or 2 regional escort squadrons, composed of 2 3 destroyers or destroyer escorts (de). destroyers tend of older classes, former escort force ships. destroyer escorts, on other hand, tend purpose built vessels. each district has number of minesweeping ships.
fleet air force
the fleet air force tasked patrol, asw , rescue tasks. composed of 7 aviation groups. prominent bases maintained @ kanoya, hachinohe, atsugi, naha, tateyama, oomura , iwakuni. fleet air force built patrol aircraft such lockheed p-3 orion, rescue aircraft such us-1a , helicopters such sh-60j. in jmsdf, helicopters deployed each escort force members of fleet air force squadrons based on land.
