this footbridge connects parkside road main entrance football stadium. bridge built part of major £7 million re-development euro 1996 international competition. regards stadium itself, first match played on 2 september 1899 , in 1966 stadium selected 1 of venues football world cup. close footbridge memorial 96 fans lost lives @ hillsborough in 1989, during fa cup semi-final between liverpool , nottingham forest. in june 2007, river don burst banks during period of severe weather in area , whole ground flooded several feet of water. part of abortive plans england staging 2018 world cup, new bridge had been planned across river don entry west stand , have been upstream of main entrance footbridge.
