many of bach s later church cantatas composed requirements of liturgical calendar, ones, including der herr denket uns, written special occasions. text taken psalms 115:12-15, speaking of thoughtful , blessing god. passage includes in verse 14: lord shall increase more , more, , children . many commentators, biographer philipp spitta onwards, have concluded cantata written wedding. have proposed weddings might have been performed, including bach s own in october 1707, when married first wife maria barbara in dornheim. bach scholar alfred dürr , others suggest cantata may have been written wedding of minister johann lorenz stauber, had conducted wedding ceremony bach, , regina wedemann, aunt of maria barbara, in dornheim on 5 june 1708. however, wedding hypothesis not proven, , general text fit other occasions.


the cantata first published in 1864 in bach gesellschaft first edition of composer s complete works. published in neue bach-ausgabe in 1958, edited frederick hudson.
