as of 2017, indian army has sanctioned strength of 49,833 officers (41,569 serving, 8,264 under strength), , 1,202,257 enlisted personnel (1,178,440 serving, 23,187 under strength). recently, has been proposed enhance strength of army more 90,000 counter increasing presence of chinese troops along line of actual control.


the indian army voluntary service, , although provision military conscription exists in indian constitution, has never been imposed. according international institute strategic studies, in 2010 army had strength of 1,129,900 active personnel , 960,000 reserve personnel. of in reserve 160,000 in indian territorial army, 40,000 of regularly report duty. makes indian army world s largest standing volunteer army.
