the majesty of law

police inspector dillon (cyril cusack) reluctantly sets out walking through countryside see old friend, dan o flaherty (noel purcell). along way, encounters mickey j. sean curran (donal donnelly) awaits execution in galway prison british during black , tan war . unpopular irish public consider him hero. sizable crowd of nuns , other demonstrators continually parade around, chanting rosary. british warden (joseph o dea) allows 2 nuns (doreen madden , maureen cusack), 1 of them claiming curran s grieving sister , visit him briefly; false sister (an american citizen) swaps clothes , places curran in cell while lights have gone out during staged power outage. unsuspecting police sergeant michael o hara (denis o dea) helps pair waiting carriage. notices 1 wearing high heels, thinks little of it.


the city sealed off manhunt fugitive begins. o hara assigned watch section of waterfront , daydreams of £500 bounty. conflicted divided loyalties, visited overtly nationalistic wife (eileen crowe). then, curran shows disguised itinerant ballad singer jimmy walsh. o hara suspicious , has him sing; curran chooses patriotic rising of moon . despite unconvincing rendition, manages slip away on boat sent him while o hara bickers wife. when policeman sees curran getting away, starts raise alarm, reconsiders , starts singing rising of moon himself.
