the series begins boon sai hong, local thief in northern city of zhumar breaking house of scholar wing tei. finds tei dead , steals 2 objects later discovers ring of staffs (which turns wearer instant master of bōjutsu) , book of hell of hungry dragons. fails find third object intended steal, phoenix heart, later discovers stolen before arrival fellow thieves, jao , yan. discovered in act, boon must fight way past agents of zhumar s corrupt ruler judge x ain.

as runs gains advisor, sapient monkey po po , discovers ring wears gives him ability master of art using type of staff weapon. learns scroll gateway hell dimension population dragons devour souls of unlucky enough fall realm.

as of goes on, bhuto khan, leader of nomadic tribes west of zhumar prepares army attack city. khan bears ring known ring of blades, giving him ability use bladed weapon @ master level of skill.

having beaten bhuto khan in combat , in possession ring of blades, boon carried through streets of zhumar celebrating populace. ask him name, mishear him , begin chant name poon fei lhong. celebration reaches house of judge x ain invites boon dinner night. there judge x ain takes possession of book of hell of hungry dragons.

using new toy, judge x ain releases dragons intending use them unknown purpose. loses control when begin devour 1 , grow bigger until there 1 singular huge dragon left. kills judge x ain , agents , breaks free zhumar itself.

boon, silken ghost , emperor s daughter, princess zheng mai lo (with secret aide tiger mah , old mother, leaders of zhumar s thieves guild—the brotherhood of scoundrels) defeats huge dragon slicing belly , releasing of smaller dragons inside. recovers book of hell of hungry dragons , silken ghost reads scroll send dragons back. princess zheng mai lo dragged them.

in aftermath of battle, boon gives ring of blades silken ghost.

in wake of fight dragons, mass exodus zhumar begins occur. stopped when newly appointed ruler, minister hyun orders city gates closed.

inside, boon , allies seek way free princess zhend mai lo hell of hungry dragons using phoenix heart. effort fails, results in return of ghost of judge x ain land of living. old mother uses phoenix heart , judge x ain pulled inside, returns having released trapped ghosts inside.

as result of event dead in zhumar begin rise , city filled ghosts. attracts attention of being known kung kung yi, spirit devours other spirits. kung kung yi begins feast , gains enough power allow ability rip souls bodies of living beings.

tei su s grandfather, 1 of ghosts have returned, shows can find ghost slayer, sword capable of destroying spirit, including kung kung yi. of released ghosts flee safety of phoenix heart escape kung kung yi, boon , silken ghost engage evil spirit in battle.

as silken ghost takes care of evil spirits remain in zhumar, ghost of judge x ain discovers how possess living , uses ability once again take control of zhumar.

in headquarters of brotherhood of scoundrels, boon searches missing jao , yan. unknown boon, 2 had stolen powerful cursed object old mother s room. object wishing doll, small porcelain statuette grants wish, twists words used wish in evil ways can. jao , yan had wished riches , doll had sent them inside sealed treasure chamber no way escape , no food or water. boon picks doll , wishes know , doll sends him , po po jao , yan s location

as happening stranger arrives @ front gates of city. identifies himself poon fei lhong , declares has come zhumar seek out man has stolen name. wears third magic ring—the ring of fists. confronted silken ghost who, after short battle, convinces him boon did not mean steal name. decides leave zhumar , takes new name nung boa—no name.

in treasure vault boon, po po, jao , yan encounter vault s guardian monsters. fight lives old mother discovers wishing doll sitting in middle of jao , yan s room , figures out happened them. after working great deal of time crafting wish wording cannot twisted wishing doll wishes boon, po po, jao , yan home.
