The Atlantic slave trade to North America Slavery in the colonial United States



only fraction of enslaved africans brought new world ended in british north america — perhaps 5-7%. vast majority of slaves transported across atlantic ocean sent caribbean sugar colonies, brazil, or spanish america. throughout americas, in caribbean, tropical disease took large toll on population , required large numbers of replacements. many africans had limited natural immunity yellow fever , malaria; malnutrition, poor housing, inadequate clothing allowances, , overwork contributed high mortality rate.


in british north america slave population rapidly increased via birth rate, whereas in caribbean colonies did not. lack of proper nourishment, being suppressed sexually, , poor health possible reasons. of small numbers of babies born slaves in caribbean, 1/4 survived miserable conditions on sugar plantations.


it not major colonial powers of western europe such france, england, spain, portugal, , netherlands involved. other countries, including sweden , denmark, participated in trans-atlantic slave trade though on more limited scale.
