cfb chilliwack established in 1941 camp chilliwack following canada s entry second world war in 1939. after outbreak of pacific war camp expanded garrison canadian army units defense of canada s west coast. base training facility: 112 canadian army basic training centre, , a6 canadian engineering training centre housed @ chilliwack until war s end in 1945.
1945–1997
during cold war, base used permanent training facility , garrison canadian army units of british columbia. base housed royal canadian school of military engineering, formerly a6 canadian engineering training centre , 58 field engineer squadron transferred cfb esquimalt on vancouver island.
following unification of canadian forces in 1968, base renamed canadian forces base chilliwack (cfb chilliwack). base housed following units:
canadian forces school of military engineering (cfsme—formerly royal canadian school of military engineering)
canadian forces officer candidate school (cfocs) (transferred in 1971 cfb chilliwack)
first combat engineer regiment (1cer—formerly 58 field engineer squadron)
in 1994, princess patricia s canadian light infantry 3rd battalion (3ppcli) transferred cfb esquimalt cfb chilliwack, last unit transferred base.
due department of national defence cutbacks @ end of cold war, base closed in 1997. cfocs transferred area support unit st-jean in quebec (asu st-jean), cfsme transferred cfb gagetown, 3ppcli , 1cer transferred cfb edmonton.
legacy
part of cfb chilliwack became residential subdivision known garrison crossing, , training facilities became canada education park, campus number of post-secondary schools. chilcotin training area, better known area c, still operational , part of western area training centre (watc). area c used primary reserves units of british columbia field training , use of firing ranges. asu used cadets field training. asu houses supply depots canadian army units of 39 canadian brigade group, , cadet units of bc. old quartermaster warehouse canadian military education centre museum.
