early career
goodwillie playing youth carse thistle in native stirling before joining dundee united 14-year-old in 2003, being spotted playing in scottish youth fa trial in dundee. in signing carse thistle, goodwillie followed in footsteps of duncan ferguson played stirling-based boys club. in july 2005, goodwillie played first team in pre-season city of discovery cup, appearing 77th-minute substitute in tournament win.
dundee united (1st spell)
he signed professional forms united in march 2005. on 31 december 2005, goodwillie made competitive debut united, appearing late substitute in defeat rangers @ ibrox. on 4 march 2006, in fifth appearance united, goodwillie came off bench score late goal united against hibernian @ easter road. during 2005–06 season, goodwillie made ten substitute appearances first team, majority coming in final few minutes of each match.
in october 2006, goodwilie signed new contract until may 2010 , started first match club, against falkirk. goodwillie started twice more under new manager craig levein in following 2 months, due injuries of other strikers. following signings made in january transfer window, found himself largely unused substitute remainder of season, featuring 6 times after new year.

on 31 august 2012 goodwillie signed on loan @ championship side crystal palace until january 2013. however, cut loan spell short in mid-october after featuring in few games, eagles assistant manager lennie lawrence stating goodwillie had struggled settle in london .
on 20 june 2014, blackburn rovers , goodwillie came mutual agreement terminate remainder of contract.
dundee united (second spell)
goodwillie returned dundee united on 2 july 2013 on six-month loan deal until 13 january 2014. scored hat-trick in 4–1 win against partick thistle in 2013–14 scottish league cup on 25 september. goodwillie scored fourth goal in 4–1 win against kilmarnock in december 2013, extended run of united scoring 4 or more goals in game. on 12 january 2014, dundee united chairman stephen thompson confirmed club not extending loan deal, stating decision not budget related s done since came back, s been bit of disappointment. goodwillie scored 6 goals in 22 appearances in return dundee united.
blackpool (loan)
goodwillie joined blackpool, under caretaker managership of barry ferguson, on 24 january 2014 on loan until end of season.
aberdeen
goodwillie signed one-year contract aberdeen in july 2014. on 17 july 2014, made debut, coming on substitute against fc groningen in europa league second qualifying round first leg. on 13 september 2014, scored first goal dons in 2–1 defeat away celtic in scottish premiership. on 21 january 2015, having scored 5 goals , established himself in first team, goodwillie signed one-year contract keeping him @ pittodrie until summer of 2016.
ross county (loan)
on 1 february 2016, goodwillie moved ross county on loan until end of 2015–16 season.
plymouth argyle
on 29 june 2016, goodwillie signed football league 2 club plymouth argyle. left plymouth mutual consent in january 2017, after civil case concluded had raped woman. club statement goodwillie had requested leave considering appeal. goodwillie scored 1 goal in 22 appearances plymouth.
clyde
returning scotland, goodwillie briefly played caledonian amateur league team doune castle. in march 2017, joined scottish league 2 side clyde on short-term contract until end of 2016–17 season. clyde s decision sign goodwillie attracted criticism, politician john mason said no longer attend games rest of season. goodwillie made debut clyde against cowdenbeath on 1 april, coming on 66th-minute substitute peter macdonald. on 15 april, goodwillie scored hat-trick clyde in 3–2 win against elgin city.
