the feeling around club had improved after last season s success in finishing 8th. supporters hoping management bring new quality players making last season s successful loan players moves permanent. club left frustrated decided seek employment elsewhere , time start of season had come around stoke had added richard cresswell, jon parkin , ryan shawcross squad. stoke s first match of season saw them travel notoriously hostile ninian park take on cardiff city. debutante ryan shawcross made perfect start stoke career scoring winning goal in 1–0 win saw steve simonsen save last minute penalty. win against promotion favourites charlton athletic followed 3–2 defeat @ southampton brought stoke first defeat of season. 3 draws against wolverhampton wanderers, hull city , barnsley failed supporters excited , during next match against plymouth argyle stoke 2–1 down, fans started venting frustrations @ manager tony pulis stoke went on win 3–2.


stoke not getting results wanted , poor home defeats sheffield wednesday , coventry city prompted pulis enter loan market again , brought in leon cort , danny pugh. enabled stoke field more settled side , began display form showed last season , went twelve matches unbeaten 24 november 2007 19 january 2008. during run stoke gained impressive victories including 3–0 @ sheffield united , ricardo fuller hat trick against promotion rivals west bromwich albion. in january transfer window stoke completed permanent signings of cort, pugh , shawcross whilst former players andy griffin , paul gallagher made return , john eustace joined watford glenn whelan joining replacement.

stoke drew struggling premier league side newcastle united in third round, match ended in goalless draw stoke creating better chances. in replay newcastle had appointed kevin keegan manager , inspired magpies 4–1 victory.
