Technology Ice resurfacer

prior invention of mechanized ice resurfacers, hand flooders such 1 pulled around rink laying layer of hot water. flooder in collection of international hockey hall of fame

finally, layer of water laid down fill in remaining grooves in ice. ice-making water released through sprinkler pipe @ rear of conditioner, wets cloth towel dragged behind resurfacer. towel ensures smooth, controlled deposition of water. hot water used because melts layer of ice below it, forming stronger bond when frozen, , because heating water drives off dissolved gases. limits chipping , cracking, providing more enjoyable skating surface. water used in many rinks filtered , treated before being heated remove minerals or chemicals in water. these impurities can otherwise make ice brittle, soft, give undesirable odors, or change color , clarity.

many ice resurfacers fitted board brush , rotary brush powered hydraulic motor. board brush extended , retracted on left side of machine hydraulic arm. allows operator collect ice shavings , debris accumulate along edge of rink (along kick plates below dasher boards of rink) conditioner cannot reach. brush sweeps accumulations path of conditioner, removes them ice. use of board brush can dramatically reduce need edging of rink.

after resurfacing entire sheet, known ice cut or flood , snow container must emptied. hydraulics raise 1 end of container, causing snow spill out.

most ice resurfacers run on natural gas, propane/lpg/autogas or electric power, or less commonly on gasoline.

smaller, cheaper machines have been designed provide smooth ice surface in manner similar traditional resurfacer. these can either self-propelled or pushed/pulled operator. self-propelled vehicles typically incorporate main components of full-size ice resurfacer, including blade , water tank, on smaller scale. these mounted atv or golf cart-like vehicle.
