career

dorjee khandu in indian army intelligence corps , worked there more 7 years. received gold medal meritorious intelligence services rendered during bangladesh war. later, engaged in social activities village people of tawang district , looked after welfare till 1980. in 1980, selected uncontested first asm , worked in same capacity till 1983.



1982: chairman, culture , co-operative societies in years. due enthusiastic efforts, cultural , co-operative societies established in tawang , lead cultural troupe representing arunachal pradesh in delhi asiad in 1982 , won silver medal performance.
1983–87: elected uncontested district vice president, west kameng district zilla parishad 1983–87.
1987–1990: engaged in intensive social works , brought water supply, electricity, communication, schools, religious institutions etc. far flung villagers 1987 1990.

political career

dorjee khandu considered architect of modern arunachal. popularly known laughing buddha , people s chief minister, brought in new era of development seeking special pm package construction of trans-arunachal highway, green field airport, railway lines, new state civil secretariat, new assembly building etc. awarded karamveer award 1 of esteemed organisations in state arunachal pradesh literary society in 2013 in recognition of contributions state. in march 1990, elected uncontested first legislative assembly of state of arunachal pradesh thingbu-mukto constituency. in march 1995, re-elected second legislative assembly of state of arunachal pradesh same constituency. became minister of state cooperation 21 march 1995.



on 21 september 1996, became cabinet minister animal husbandry & veterinary, dairy development.
in 1998, minister of power 1998–2006.
in october 1999, elected third legislative assembly of state of arunachal pradesh. minister mines, relief & rehabilitation 15 october 2002 27 july 2003.
on 28 july 2003, became minister relief & rehabilitation , disaster management.
in 2004, re-elected unopposed mukto constituency in arunachal pradesh legislative assembly elections , became minister power, ncer, , relief , rehabilitation.

chief minister of arunachal pradesh

on 9 april 2007, became chief minister of state, replacing gegong apang. in 2009, again elected unopposed same constituency , sworn in chief minister of state on 25 october 2009.


disappearance , death

on 30 april 2011, helicopter carrying khandu , 4 other people on trip tawang itanagar disappeared. on 2 may, aerial search khandu halted due inclement weather, necessitating move ground search indian army, police, ssb , indo-tibetan border police. personnel searching heavily forested 66 square kilometer section of west kameng district, satellites detected possible plane remnants. witnesses said heard large explosion on morning of 30 april.


on 4 may 2011, @ around 11 am, remnants of crashed helicopter found group of tribals near tawang district. although crash has been blamed on poor condition of helicopter, single engine 4 seater eurocopter b8 provided pawan hans, helicopter put service in 2010.


p chidambaram, home minister of india confirmed news of death of dorjee khandu on morning of 5 may. earlier in briefing minister of external affairs, sm krishna said pained demise of dorjee khandu.


the last rites of chief minister performed in native village, gyangkhar, in tawang district per monpa buddhist traditions. power minister jarbom gamlin succeeded him chief minister, resign on 31 october same year.
