in public swimming pools, dress code may stricter on public beaches, , in indoor pools stricter outdoor pools. example, in countries women can topless on beach, not allowed in swimming pool, , swimsuit must worn. men, wearing ordinary shorts , tee shirt go in water @ beach may considered acceptable, pools require real swim suits or other dedicated water wear. swimming regular clothes on not unhygienic, can potentially weigh swimmer down should or need rescued. in france , other european countries, board shorts not allowed hygienic reasons. in nordic countries , in particular iceland, rules clothing , hygiene strict. when diving high board, swim suits worn doubled (one brief inside another) in case outer suit tears on impact water.
