this figure expresses main theme of memorial fountain, namely, spirit of mankind rising out of encircling flames of war, pestilence, , destructive elements of life, reaching , ascending new understanding of life. man rising above death, reaching upward god , toward peace.




on surface of polished granite rim surrounding fountain bronze plates bearing names of 5,552 greater clevelanders have fallen in military service during times of war 1899 2014, span of 115 years. includes patriots spanish–american war, world war i, world war ii, korean war, vietnam war, gulf war, , iraq war. these names memorialized in greater cleveland veterans memorial honor roll.
