bové born in st. petersburg in family of vincenzo giovanni bova, painter naples settled in russia in 1782. had 2 younger brothers, michaele , alessandro, trained in architecture , later became associates. after joseph s birth, family moved moscow. 1802 1807, studied architecture. starting in 1807 worked assistant matvei kazakov , carlo rossi in moscow , tver. full-time employee of expedition, involved in various kremlin maintenance jobs. in 1813, after fire of moscow (1812) razed of city, bové hired moscow building commission , assigned lead facade department , responsible approval of new facade designs , enforcing placement of new buildings according new master plan s street lines. plan, however, not finalized until 1817. private builders numerous bové , city failed control them. emperor alexander, visiting moscow, enraged see buildings painted in kinds of colors, deep red , dark green, , issued decree limited city palette modest, pale colours.


while giliardi family rebuilding major public buildings moscow state university, bové in charge of designing , rebuilding new central squares of moscow , red square. best known project, theatre square, completed in 1825, both bolshoi theater , maly theater subsequently rebuilt, , square lost neoclassical symmetry. in fact, of buildings demolished accidents or real estate developers:
