in 1984, aged 22, garlin moved chicago pursue stand-up comedy career. performed comedy troupe second city. worked in box office stephen colbert.


in late 1980s, garlin briefly roommates, in wrigleyville, chicago, conan o brien, comedy writer. remains close o brien, , after o brien removed host of tonight show in 2010 jay leno return, garlin stated not guest on show again.

nine years after making uncredited début gut gut in spring break (1983), garlin earned first film credit in 1992 in dolly parton s comedy straight talk. had small role in robocop 3 donut jerk after member of casting crew witnessed garlin eating doughnut while leaving krispy kreme additional 2 dozen doughnuts. had cameo appearances in austin powers: spy shagged me in 1999. other cameo appearances include run ronnie run!, after sunset, fat albert, , sleepover. appeared in steven soderbergh s full frontal (2002) , eddie murphy in daddy day care (2003). in 2005, had small role in fun dick , jane.


in 2008, garlin appeared in rocker stan, , played ed lawson in strange wilderness. lent voice disney/pixar film toy story 3, buttercup. appeared sid, alongside jennifer aniston , gerard butler, in 2010 comedy-action film bounty hunter. played ed burch in laggies, released in 2014.


his feature directorial debut, want eat cheese (which wrote), premiered favorable reviews @ 2006 tribeca film festival. opened in september 2007. film co-starred sarah silverman , bonnie hunt.


in 2006, garlin directed filthy world, one-man show performed director john waters. voice actor in wall-e, animated film pixar released june 27, 2008, captain of axiom spaceship. garlin executive produced documentary finding vivian maier (2013).


in 2013, garlin directed second film, dealin idiots, inspired experiences 2 sons in little league. entire movie improvised.

on february 23, 2010, garlin released book, footprint: carrying weight of world, memoir documents journey lessen both physical , carbon footprint.
