the city historically formed part of székely land region of transylvania province. first mentioned in 1332. belonged kingdom of hungary, principality of transylvania (1557–1765) , grand duchy of transylvania (1765–1867). between 1867–1918 fell within kingdom of hungary. administratively, town belonged gyergyószék, then, 1876 until 1918 csík county in austria-hungary. after world war i, terms of treaty of trianon of 1920, became part of romania , fell within ciuc county. result of second vienna award, belonged hungary again between 1940 , 1944. after world war ii, came under romanian administration , became part of romania in 1947. between 1952 , 1960, formed part of hungarian autonomous province, then, of mureș-hungarian autonomous province until abolished in 1968. since then, commune part of harghita county.
