history

sherds iron age i, iron age ii, persian, hellenistic, roman, byzantine , mamluk eras have been found. edward robinson identified atara biblical ataroth mentioned in book of joshua. however, modern authorities prefer place ataroth elsewhere.

ottoman era

in 1517, village incorporated ottoman empire rest of palestine. in 1596 appeared in tax registers being in nahiya of quds of liwa of quds. had population of 55 muslim households , paid taxes on wheat, barley, olives, vines or fruit trees, , goats or beehives.

in 17th-19th centuries, atara located in nahiya of bani zeid. adult males required pay 58-60 akçe ottoman government in jerusalem. french explorer victor guérin passed village in 1870, , estimated have 300 inhabitants. official ottoman village list same time (1870) showed atara had total of 80 houses , population of 225, though population count included men only. in 1882, palestine exploration fund s survey of western palestine described attara large village, seemingly ancient, in conspicuous position on hill, olives round it.

in 1896 population of atara estimated 480 persons.

british mandate of palestine

at time of 1922 census of palestine, atara had population of 407 muslims, increasing in 1931 census 559 muslims in 133 occupied houses. in 1922, jewish national fund established moshav on 500 dunams of land. known ataroth, 1 of first zionist hill settlements.

in 1945 population 690 in atara, muslims, while total land area 9,545 dunams, according official land , population survey. of this, 7,095 allocated plantations , irrigable land, 3,550 cereals, while 45 dunams classified built-up areas.

modern era

in wake of 1948 arab–israeli war, , after 1949 armistice agreements, atara came under jordanian rule. after six-day war in 1967, atara has been under israeli occupation.

in 2002, 95-year-old atara resident fatima hassan became oldest palestinian fatality in second intifada when taxi in shot @ israeli soldiers. witnesses said car waiting in long line of cars , soldiers smashed windows before firing. israeli military source said soldiers fired @ taxi after ignored orders halt on prohibited road.
