iridomyrmex ants share symbiotic relationships many caterpillars, aphids , coccids. workers protect these caterpillars , take them feeding chambers inside nest. in genus jalmenus, workers attend butterflies jalmenus clementi (turquoise hairstreak), jalmenus daemeli (emerald hairstreak), jalmenus eichhorni (northern hairstreak),jalmenus evagoras (imperial hairstreak) jalmenus icilius (amethyst hairstreak), jalmenus inous (varied hairstreak) , jalmenus lithochroa (waterhouse s hairstreak). in genus ogyris, attendants include ogyris amaryllis (satin azure), ogyris olane (olane azure) , ogyris oroetes (silky azure). additional species workers attend include anthene lycaenoides (pale ciliate blue), candalides heathi (rayed blue), candalides margarita (trident pencil-blue), deudorix diovis (bright cornelian), euchrysops cnejus (gram blue), lampides boeticus (pea blue), leptotes plinius (plumbago blue), lucia limbaria (chequered copper), nesolycaena caesia (kimberly spotted opal), neolucia agricola (fringed heath-blue) , theclinesthes serpentata (saltbush blue). i. bicknelli effective pollinator of microtis parviflora, , 1 study suggests pollen not harmed contact of these ants.


meat ants have been observed blocking banded sugar ant nesting holes pebbles , soil prevent them leaving nest during hours of day. ants counter preventing meat ants leaving nest blocking nesting holes debris, behaviour known nest-plugging. if meat ant nests encroached trees or other shade, banded sugar ants may invade , take on nest, since health of colony may deteriorate overshadowing. members of affected meat ant colony later move nearby satellite nest placed in suitable area, while invading banded sugar ants fill nest galleries black resinous material.
