the presbyterian church of new zealand formed in october 1901 amalgamation of churches in synod of otago , southland (which had largely free church heritage) north of waitaki river.


presbyterians had , large come new zealand settlers scotland, ireland , australia. dunedin (founded in 1848) , waipu (founded in 1853) presbyterian settlements, significant numbers of presbyterians settled in other parts of country, including christchurch, port nicholson (wellington), , auckland. ministers came first european settlers wellington, otago , waipu, nascent congregations called ministers scotland. missions māori people focused on tuhoe people , led establishment of māori synod, known te aka puaho.


in 1862 presbytery of auckland had had support presbyterian church of ireland , applied support united presbyterian church of scotland.


ethnic diversity grew after world war ii arrival of dutch , european settlers , more recent pacific island , asian migrants. in 1969 majority of congregational churches joined presbyterian church of new zealand. word aotearoa became part of title of denomination in 1990, affirming treaty partnership between indigenous māori , subsequent settlers. of 2014 pcanz has 419 congregations.
